To speak the same language as your lash artist, it helps to know the three basic parameters of a set: type, curl and diameter. Let's go through each.
Set types
Partial set — an extension is attached not to every natural lash but to every second one or fewer. Used to emphasise a natural look or accent the outer corners.
Full set (classic) — one extension per natural lash. The most universal option; the outer corner can be densified for extra expression.
Volume (2D, 3D) — a fan of two or three extensions per natural lash. Visually two to three times more lashes; a bright, open look.
Mega volume (4D–7D) — four or more extensions per natural lash. For stage, shoots and bold looks.
Curl
The curl is the main tool for adjusting eye shape. The basic options are shown below.
B — the most natural, barely different from your own lash: a subtle accent without changing the shape.
C — one of the most popular. The effect of lashes curled with mascara.
CC — noticeably more curled: opens the eye and makes the look more expressive.
D — a pronounced curl for a maximally open gaze. Not for everyone — it can look harsh on mature eyes.
L — curled near the tip with a straight base. The go-to tool for monolid eyes and heavily hooded lids.
Diameter (thickness)
Extensions are made of synthetic microfibre in different thicknesses.
Thick (0.18–0.25 mm) — a heavy-mascara effect, slightly stiffer in wear. Thin (0.10–0.15 mm) — a natural look and the base for volume techniques. Ultra-thin (0.05–0.07 mm) — weightless, for the most natural result.
The familiar names "mink", "silk", "kolinsky", "sable" are marketing labels for thickness, not the material: "mink" and "silk" are ultra-thin, "kolinsky" — thin, "sable" — thick.
Length and mapping
Lengths range from 6 to 14 mm. Within one set the artist typically uses 4–5 lengths, building a smooth gradient from short at the inner corner to long at the outer.
