What affects how long lash extensions last?

What affects how long lash extensions last?

After a fresh set you want the result to last as long as possible. Yet sometimes the work is neat, the aftercare is followed — and lashes still start shedding within days. There are usually several reasons, and almost all of them can be addressed.

Four factors that shorten retention

  1. Aftercare — especially the first 24 hours. While the adhesive finishes curing, lashes are most vulnerable. See the do's and don'ts in "Proper care for lash extensions".
  2. Hormones. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, the menstrual cycle and thyroid conditions all affect how well the adhesive bonds. Sets done right before or during your period often wear off sooner.
  3. The water you wash with. High chlorine and hard-water minerals play a minor role, but they do contribute.
  4. The artist's work. Adhesive and material quality plus clean technique: no stickies, one extension attached to exactly one natural lash. Mistakes here cut retention the most.

If your lashes shed quickly, go through this list and discuss it with your artist: every case is individual, but the cause can usually be found.
